VACANT POSITIONS - An Atlas of Residual Human Professions
By Pixages / Marco Sors · IT
VACANT POSITIONS is an interactive artwork and visual atlas built from one hundred original collages by Pixages / Marco Sors. It imagines an alternative labour market for a future in which precision, productivity and prediction have become predominantly artificial skills. Its central question is: what activities will humans continue to invent in order to give meaning to their presence? Each collage is treated as evidence from this labour market and paired with an improbable occupation, a concise description, a fictional record from the future and a curatorial note. Forty positions grow from plausible transformations already visible today, while sixty enter speculative futures and magical realism. Together they protect or administer qualities that resist perfect measurement: error, desire, memory, ritual, uselessness, imagination and the unexpected. The browser-based work opens as a journey through time. By scrolling from 2026 to 2100, the visitor moves through a changing constellation of images and gradually enters the future labour market. The Atlas can then be explored through three interconnected views: a network of professions, a geographical and extraterrestrial map, and a timeline. Filters allow the visitor to move between six departments and between plausible and speculative positions. Selecting a luminous node opens the complete profession record. A participatory test, Find Your Future Job, turns the visitor into an applicant. By choosing what they wish to preserve, where they would work and when they would begin, each participant is matched with a profession, its location, year and fictional record. The test is not an employability forecast but a narrative mirror: a way of asking which forms of human agency each person would carry into the future. The work moves between administrative satire, everyday science fiction and a metaphysics of labour. Rather than predicting which jobs will disappear, it creates an atlas of the strange, fragile and sometimes absurd forms of human activity that might remain.
