The Waiting Room
By Airiquel · CA
There are places we leave long before we understand that we have left them. We carry them with us quietly: a room, a doorway, an empty seat, the shape of someone who is no longer there. Sometimes absence does not arrive as a single moment of loss. It settles slowly into ordinary spaces, until the place itself begins to feel like a memory. THE WAITING ROOM inhabits that quiet territory between departure and return, where time becomes suspended and the future remains forever just out of reach. We wait for people to come back, for answers that may never arrive, for apologies, for another chance, for the life we once imagined would eventually become ours. And somewhere along the way, waiting stops being something we do and becomes somewhere we live. The empty seat becomes a witness to everything that cannot be recovered. The doorway offers passage, but no arrival. Beyond it, the landscape continues, indifferent to what has been lost. The room remains, holding the shape of an expectation after the person who carried it has disappeared. Perhaps this is what waiting ultimately reveals: that we are not always waiting for someone else. Sometimes we are waiting for the past to change, for absence to become presence again, or for time to return something it has already taken from us. THE WAITING ROOM is not a room for waiting for someone else, but a room in which time waits for us.
