Humanity has built machines that can write, reason and act on our behalf, tools of nearly unlimited potential. And what do we do with them? We make cats. This is Pandora, my cat, enthroned on a mountain above a kneeling crowd. The scene is an epic painting in the old language of gods and temples, and the deity is a house cat who has no idea she is divine. The joke is on us: we have always worshipped what comforts us, and today our new idols are funny cat pictures and videos, which we now generate with the most powerful technology we have ever made. The image is made with AI, deliberately. It is a portrait of how we use it. The tool supplies the spectacle, but the idea, the irony, and the cat are human.
