Laughter
By Natallia Beliayeva · PL
Laughter is part of my series Anatomy of Fear. For Human After All, I see this work as a reflection on the difference between representing an emotion and actually living through it. In the context of Human After All, I am interested in the difference between producing an image of emotion and giving that image human meaning. Today, AI can generate a convincing laughing face in seconds. But laughter itself is complex: it can express joy, relief, nervousness, embarrassment, fear or loss of control — sometimes several of these states at once. In this painting I deliberately exaggerate the face, the open mouth and the physical tension of the expression. The laughter becomes almost excessive and slightly unsettling. I wanted the viewer to be unsure whether this is pure joy or whether something more complicated is happening beneath it. For me, this ambiguity is fundamentally human. The meaning of an expression comes not only from what we see, but from memory, experience, relationships and the situations we have lived through. My role as an artist is not simply to reproduce a face, but to interpret that complexity through observation, intuition, distortion, colour and the physical act of painting. Laughter, 2023 Acrylic on canvas, 40 × 50 cm.
