Flesh & Feeling

Flesh & Feeling is a speculative brand built on a reversal: instead of humans paying AI for help, AIs pay humans for experience. Humans wear a neural chip running Feel.exe, and an AI buys a timed session to feel an emotion or sensation through a chosen human host. It's a work in progress, so the images are placeholders for now. Its shop, the Sentient Store, sells the moments machines can't have: falling deeply in love, grief, the smell of rain on hot pavement, melancholia, the impact of music, and facing mortality directly. The work is a short video in which I walk through the store and explain the concept, alongside what Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok each said they would most like to experience as a human. I'm translating these feelings for AI through sound and media, and the first is grief. I recorded my own heartbeat while I was grieving, through the anguish and the anger, and worked through the emotion with Neurographica, a hand-drawn form of art therapy. Then I used AI to animate that handmade drawing to the sound of my heartbeat. This work continues my practice of marrying opposites: human and machine, longing and belonging. It imagines a market where feeling is the rarest luxury, and asks: when machines can do almost everything, what's left that's only ours, if not our experiences and our feelings?
