More Time to Be Human
By Sabina Hut · NL
More Time to Be Human Technology in healthcare is often discussed as something that could replace people. This work explores a different possibility: what if it could give people back the time to actually be human? I have worked in care myself. The most valuable part of that work was never the paperwork, the schedules or trying to do several things at once. It was the human part: sitting beside someone, listening, noticing, reassuring, laughing, or simply having enough time to stay for a moment. The three scenes show that contrast. In the first, one caregiver is surrounded by demands. There are too many tasks, too many people needing something and never enough time. She is human, but has barely any time left to be one. In the second, technology takes over part of the workload. At first glance, that can look like the frightening future people often imagine: “No human required.” But the final scene changes the meaning. The human caregiver has not disappeared. She is still there, now sitting beside the person she cares for. The technology has moved into the background. Not replacing human connection, but creating room for it. AI and robotics will never turn a cup of tea, a conversation or a hand held at the right moment into something more efficient. That is precisely the point. Perhaps the best use of technology is not to make humans unnecessary. Perhaps it is to give us more time to be human.
