Animal Nature & Digital Realities
By Johannes van den Bussche · DE
Animal Nature and Digital Reality Part of the series Code & Cosmos, Animal Nature and Digital Reality brings two dimensions of human existence into a single image: the organism shaped by evolution and the digital systems arising from its capacity for abstraction. The skull gives material presence to our animal origins. Circuitry spreads across and through it, forming a technological layer that increasingly becomes integrated into the body that created it. The skull carries a further significance: it evokes existence prior to its conceptual ordering, a reality encountered before it is named, interpreted or encoded. Its intersection with the circuitry gives visual form to the relationship between this underlying reality and the structures through which we apprehend it. These structures make experience intelligible while also shaping—and potentially obscuring—our perception. The painting locates the human within this layered condition: rooted in an evolutionary past, extending itself through technology, and capable of an awareness that exceeds its own conceptual systems.
