Midnight Sun (Sol da Meia-Noite)

"Every shadow holds a form of light. Every light knows the shadow." For more than two decades my work has taken me into communities in Mozambique marked by poverty, conflict and inequality. Only much later did I realise that I had always been photographing the same thing: the light that remained when everything around seemed to speak only of darkness. Midnight Sun begins with these documentary photographs and transforms them through collage, torn paper, African and Indian textile patterns and a recurring disc of gold. The works do not soften hardship; they slow the gaze down and invite a second look at what a documentary image alone tends to reduce to evidence of suffering: a gesture of care, a quiet dignity, the human capacity to resist and carry on. Light and darkness have never stopped coexisting. The series opens at the Fundação Fernando Leite Couto, Maputo, on 21 October 2026.
