Closer Than Ever, Further Apart

Closer Than Ever, Further Apart explores a contradiction of modern human connection: technology has brought the world closer together while sometimes creating distance between the people already beside us. The artwork moves through three interconnected states of human connection. On one side is the world before constant digital connectivity. Generations of a family gather closely around one another: talking, laughing, sharing stories, looking through books and photographs, teaching children and simply spending time together. Their connection is physical and immediate. Attention moves between people rather than screens. Memories are created collectively and passed from one generation to another. At the center, the same idea of togetherness changes. A family still occupies the same room, but each person is absorbed in a separate device. They are physically close yet psychologically elsewhere. The image does not present this as a simple condemnation of technology; instead, it asks whether proximity still means connection when our attention can exist somewhere completely different. The other side reveals the opposite truth. The internet and artificial intelligence have allowed people separated by thousands of kilometres, cultures, languages and circumstances to communicate, learn and create together. People who may never share the same physical room can exchange knowledge and ideas almost instantly. Technology can therefore separate the nearest people while simultaneously bringing the most distant ones together. This contradiction is the heart of the work. The flowing light connecting the different scenes represents technology itself. It is neither inherently warm nor cold, intimate nor isolating. Its meaning changes according to how humans choose to use it. Organic flowers, memories and family scenes gradually merge with digital networks, geometric forms and a connected globe, suggesting that the technological and human worlds can no longer be completely separated. The glowing form held at the centre represents human agency: the element that remains constant before and after AI. Technology can accelerate creation, cross borders and generate almost limitless possibilities, but it cannot determine which relationships deserve our attention or why a memory matters. There is also an intentional irony behind the work. Artificial intelligence helped create the image, and AI also assisted me in articulating this written description. A work questioning how technology mediates human communication is itself being communicated through that technology. Rather than hiding this contradiction, I wanted the process to become part of the artwork. The machine helped produce images and language, but the questions behind them, family, attention, distance, presence and what we choose to value, came from human experience and human judgement. We may now be able to reach almost anyone. The question is whether we still know how to reach the person sitting next to us.
