WHAT REMAINS
By STOYCHEV · MK
This work began as a hand-drawn portrait on paper, created by me before any use of artificial intelligence. I later used AI as a tool to refine and transform the original image, while deliberately preserving the character, gaze and structure of my drawing. The machine did not create the subject from nothing; it entered an image that already had a human history, intention and authorship. The resulting portrait exists between two forms of making: the trace of the human hand and the intervention of the machine. For me, the question is not whether AI can create a convincing image. It can. The question is: what remains human when the machine becomes capable of making the image too? What remains is choice: what I keep, what I allow to change, and what I decide the image should ultimately mean. Human-made. AI-assisted. Human-directed.
