A Shared Blind Spot
By Anonymous · TW
A large mirror stands in a public square. Some people adjust their appearance in its reflection, while others brace their bodies against its frame to keep it upright. Rendered in the visual language of an old newspaper engraving, the scene brings admiration and physical effort into the same picture. The mirror offers a shared image, but the people who sustain it occupy its edges. Their work is visible to us even as attention gathers around the reflection. This tension extends beyond vanity: institutions, public narratives and collective identities also depend on contributions that receive unequal recognition. The work asks how a community's picture of itself is held in place, whose effort becomes part of that picture, and whose presence is easiest to overlook.
