A Pattern Is Not Just a Pattern: What Minangkabau Songket Can Teach Artificial Intelligence About Meaning
By Hamdani Syaputra · ID
A Pattern Is Not Just a Pattern is a reflective essay on artificial intelligence, cultural meaning, and Minangkabau songket from West Sumatra, Indonesia. Using the pucuak rabuang motif as its central example, the work asks what happens when generative AI can reproduce the visual grammar of a cultural tradition without inheriting the relationships, memory, responsibility, and values that give that tradition meaning. Rather than arguing against AI, the essay proposes that the distinct human contribution lies in responsibility: deciding what should be transformed, what requires attribution and context, and how technology can support cultural transmission rather than reduce living traditions to reproducible style.
