Sometimes I Wish the Artist Were a Machine
By Elvira Koroleva · PL
What if artificial intelligence turned out to be an easier collaborator than a human artist? Drawing on my experience of organising around forty exhibitions in Warsaw and Prague, this personal essay explores the unpredictable human relationships behind contemporary art. Artists cancel exhibitions at the last minute, argue over the best wall, take offence at curatorial decisions and sometimes expect lifelong professional loyalty. But curators are hardly impartial themselves. Friendships, personal sympathies, resentment and uncomfortable encounters can influence which artists receive opportunities and recognition. Through humour, real-life anecdotes and self-reflection, I examine artistic egos, professional boundaries and the uncomfortable possibility that machines might sometimes be easier to work with than people. Ultimately, the essay asks whether we value human creativity because of our imperfections, or despite them — and what we risk losing when efficiency becomes more attractive than human connection.
