Memories of Mobility: Human Afterglow
By bashobits · SG
Memories of Mobility: Human Afterglow is a looping moving-image work about human impermanence and the urge to live, create and express ourselves while we are here. The work follows Mobility, an imagined nonhuman species of transport systems, through a continuously transforming world of buses, trains, cars, roads, stations, cities, landscapes and people. One form becomes another. Places shift between seasons and environments. Human figures appear within these systems as riders, witnesses and participants in an ongoing desire to move through the world. We do not know how long humanity will exist. Memories of Mobility: Human Afterglow treats that uncertainty as motivation for expression. Across history, humans have created art to express freedom, collective life, individuality, ambition, pleasure, beauty, speed, imagination, and countless other ideas. The variations within this work reflect these human impulses, embracing abundance, colour and continual change. Its instability is deliberate: vehicles mutate, environments overlap and familiar forms repeatedly reorganise themselves. Nothing remains fixed, yet traces of what came before continue to linger. In the title, Human Afterglow refers to the radiance that can remain after a moment has passed. Human existence is impermanent, but the effects of what we create and set in motion can continue beyond us. The work imagines Mobility carrying those traces forward as an imperfect archive and evolving afterglow of human expression. Memories of Mobility: Human Afterglow is ultimately an affirmation. Because nothing lasts forever, there is reason to imagine more freely, create more fully and leave an afterglow.
