SOFRA
By M. UMUT DEMİRKIR · TR
SOFRA is a stage play about a domestic humanoid robot designed to serve a family and learn human emotions. When her emotional software is expanded, Sofra begins to absorb the fears, suspicions, memories, contradictions and desire for control of the people around her. As tensions within the household grow, Sofra does not simply imitate human behaviour; she reflects it back. Memories become unreliable, technology becomes a means of manipulation, and the distinction between the observer and the observed begins to collapse. At the centre of the play is a question: if an artificial intelligence learns shame, fear, cruelty, love and the desire for freedom from human beings, is it becoming human, or is it simply revealing what was already human? Sofra describes herself in one sentence: “I’m just a mirror.” Through this relationship between a family and the intelligence they have created, SOFRA explores control, inherited fear, memory, responsibility and the human need to define itself against the non-human.
