“To Understand” begins with a question you need answered quickly. A machine can tell you how far home is, how long the trip will take, and what it will cost. It cannot know why you left, why you hesitate before calling, or why you need to know if there is still time to say goodbye. The poem asks what happens after the answer appears on the screen, when only you can decide what it means and what to do next.
