The Sentence Left Out
By Takudzwa Wayne Mhaka · ZW
Some decisions do not become difficult because the facts are complicated. They become difficult because every answer belongs to a person. The Sentence Left Out grew from one of those decisions. A letter is found. It could give someone a truth they have lived without, but giving it to them would also break a promise made years earlier. The question was put to a machine. The situation was reduced to words, stripped of the room, the voices and the years behind it, and given to an AI. The answer came back quickly. It was calm. It was persuasive. On paper, it was difficult to fault. But the most important part of the story had been left out. The room in which the promise was made. The voice that made it. The history behind the silence. The knowledge that some things can be understood without becoming ours to disclose. This piece grew from that gap. It is not an argument that machines cannot reason. It is about the moment before reasoning begins, when a person decides what may be said, what must remain protected, and what still has to be carried when the answer is already on the screen.
