DEMETER — Expanded Installation
By Paulo Coqueiro · BR
DEMETER is conceived both as a single-channel video artwork and as a spatial installation. This submission focuses on the installation as an expanded form of the audiovisual work, in which projected images enter into a material and spatial relationship with an arrangement of boxes and exhibition surfaces. The work reconsiders historical representations of Brazilian landscapes in relation to the contemporary agricultural commodity system. Drawing on landscape painting and AI-based image synthesis, it brings together images associated with pasture, monoculture, storage and the circulation of agricultural goods. The landscape is approached not as a neutral view of nature, but as a visual construction shaped by histories of occupation, extraction and economic value. In the installation, the boxes evoke the infrastructures through which agricultural commodities are stored, classified and transported. The projected image interacts with the surfaces, edges and seams of the arrangement, making the display structure part of the visual experience. The relationship between image and object connects the representation of the landscape to the material systems that transform it into a commodity. The installation is proposed as a flexible spatial configuration, adaptable to the conditions of the exhibition space. Its arrangement and scale can respond to the available architecture while preserving the relationship between projected image, material support and the logic of storage and circulation. DEMETER is not dependent on an installation format: it can also be presented as a single-channel video. Here, the spatial configuration is presented as an expanded form of the work, allowing the relationship between landscape imagery and commodity infrastructure to be experienced through the exhibition space.
