The Circle of Life and the Five Elements Year: 2005 remastered in 2025 · Athens Medium: Watercolor, ink, charcoal, rare handmade papers & Mixed Media Dimensions: 70 x 100 cm Description The Circle of Life is a symbolic mixed media composition inspired by the Chinese philosophy of the Five Elements, portraying the eternal cycle of transformation that sustains all existence. Through expressive drawing, collage, and layered textures, Water gives birth to Wood, Wood nourishes Fire, Fire returns to Earth, Earth creates Metal, and Metal renews the cycle. As Metal completes the Cycle it returns the Spirit to the Stars, although with Love and the Music of the Galaxy the Cycle of Life can start all over again. The central spiral, a symbol initailaly inspired by a dream and later mysteriously found at the entrance of an abandoned castle at the island of Kythera evokes the rhythm of the universe and the Power of Life. Extensive references to time, music, and celestial forms at the top of the painting, the Zenith, emphasize the power of fire, hence passion in life, and also suggest that external, unseen forces co-shape destiny, and finally that, with the passage of time, every ending is also a beginning. Balancing ancient eastern wisdom and western exploration with contemporary visual language, the work becomes a poetic meditation on renewal, harmony, and the interconnected forces that shape both nature and the human spirit.
