THE LAST WITNESS is a forensic-style literary work built around a single piece of evidence: an image of two people, a closed door, and a hand resting on a lock. The same observations can support two completely different readings of what happened. The work does not resolve the contradiction. Instead, it repeats the evidence without changing it, allowing the reader to notice how much of a story can come from interpretation rather than from the evidence itself. The final blank is intentional. The missing cause is not supplied by the witness, the system, or the author.
