What the Hand Remembers
By Nicholas Paton · AU
"What the Hand Remembers" is a short personal essay of about 1,000 words that answers the prize's question: when a machine can generate anything, what human contribution still makes a work matter? It starts with a grandmother's tin of four thousand buttons and the one plain brown button she kept because of the story behind it. The essay then describes asking a machine for poem after poem about that tin. Each one was good, and choosing became the hard part. The essay values effort and craft, and does not dismiss generated work. Its argument is that meaning comes from choosing: what to keep, what to rewrite and what to leave out, guided by connections no machine has to the things we care about.
