Why This Work?
By Elvira Koroleva · PL
*Why This Work?* is a personal curatorial essay about selection, visibility and responsibility in the age of artificial intelligence. Drawing on my experience as an art historian and curator, I reflect on what it means to choose an artist or an artwork when digital systems are increasingly capable of analysing, classifying and recommending cultural content. The text considers artists who are often seen through categories before their work is truly seen: disability, diagnosis, nationality, migration, exile or gender. These categories can provide important context, but they can also become more visible than the artwork itself. For me, curating is not simply the ability to identify what is “good” or relevant. It is the responsibility to decide what becomes visible, to question my own criteria, to return to works I may initially have misunderstood, and to accept the possibility of being wrong. Rather than asking whether AI can replace the curator, the essay asks a different question: when machines can create, analyse and select, who remains responsible for the choice?
