THE ROOTS REMEMBER

"THE ROOTS REMEMBER" imagines an impossible archaeological discovery: a living Cannabis specimen emerging from a centuries-old human-made vessel. Created to contain, the vessel has fractured, exposing the intricate root system normally hidden from view. Human fingerprints remain impressed in its surface - traces of the hands that shaped, classified and attempted to control the natural world. Cannabis is used deliberately as a botanical organism that has existed simultaneously as medicine, commodity, cultural symbol and prohibited plant. The work explores the tension between biological life and human systems of ownership, classification and control. The vessel represents the systems humanity constructs around nature. The roots reveal what those systems cannot fully contain. The object breaks; the organism continues.
