Before and After Knowledge
By 조은택 · KR
Before and After Knowledge reimagines the biblical moment of the Fruit of Knowledge as a transition in human consciousness. Adam, who has not yet received the fruit, appears in a flat medieval sacred-art style, representing innocence, simplicity, and humanity before self-awareness. Eve, having already crossed that threshold, is rendered with the depth, realism, and emotional complexity associated with Renaissance painting. Between them lies the cosmic fruit: one half evokes an ordered medieval vision of the heavens, while the other opens into an immense universe of stars and galaxies. It represents knowledge not merely as information, but as the beginning of reason, morality, self-consciousness, civilization, and the human awareness of good and evil. The work uses the contrast between two periods of art history to visualize a single philosophical question: what changes when humanity becomes aware of itself?
