Fossils of Tomorrow
By Anonymous · TW
Fossils of Tomorrow is a twelve-page illustrated story in which possible futures form underground as stones. Burning a stone produces power and permanently removes the particular future it contains. Engineer Shen He pays to preserve a possible recovery for her ill daughter, while approving the burning of stones classified as blank. When she discovers unfamiliar life within them, stopping the furnace would also interrupt the hospital's power. The story follows her attempt to protect that life while maintaining care for people who depend on its destruction. It connects extraction, classification and personal hope with the question of who bears the cost of a transition. Ten AI-generated images accompany the changing locations, with Chinese and English narrative. The world is fictional.
