SELF PORTR[AI]T
By Massa · TR
I don't think there is one version of me that is the real one. I made this portrait from photographs of myself taken at different moments, transferred, cut apart, and pieced together again. None of these fragments is enough to call me “me.” A face can be recorded perfectly and still know nothing about the person inside it. The cuts matter to me because memory works much the same way. We keep pieces. We lose others. We misremember. We change, and somehow continue recognizing ourselves. A machine can reconstruct my face from information. I reconstructed it from memory. Perhaps being human is not about being whole. Perhaps it is about carrying every version of ourselves that no longer exists, and still answering when someone calls our name.
