The Last Language

"The Last Language" explores what remains uniquely human when artificial intelligence becomes capable not only of processing our words, but of assigning meaning to them. A woman with Alzheimer’s disease has lost conventional language. An AI system, trained on the digital traces of her life, begins to infer what her fragmented sentences might mean. As its confidence grows, however, the distinction between translation and construction becomes increasingly uncertain. The story asks whether technological capability is sufficient justification for use, and whether every ambiguity should be resolved simply because a machine can attempt to resolve it. At its core, "The Last Language" is about memory, intimacy and the limits of interpretation: the possibility that one of the most human acts left to us may be the decision to leave another person partly unknowable.
