The Convergence of Agency
By Andris Visnevskis · PT
The Convergence of Agency explores what happens to individuality when knowledge becomes increasingly shared. If everyone can increasingly access the same vast reservoir of information, images, ideas, and creative material, what remains uniquely ours? The figures in the work appear to move along different paths. Their trajectories are distinct, their directions seem individually chosen, yet they gradually converge toward a common destination. This destination can be understood as shared knowledge: a point where what was once unknown, inaccessible, or personally discovered becomes available to everyone. The work considers a paradox: greater access can expand our freedom to choose while simultaneously making the material from which we make those choices increasingly common. Perhaps individuality was never shaped only by what we know. Perhaps it was also shaped by what we did not know. Before information could be retrieved instantly, our worlds were partly defined by absence: things we had never seen, people we had never heard of, places we had never encountered, questions we could not answer. These gaps were not simply limitations. They created space for curiosity, chance encounters, misunderstanding, discovery, and imagination. They made knowledge personal. As those gaps become increasingly easy to fill, the relationship between knowledge and individuality begins to change. The question is not whether technology will make us identical, but whether the conditions that once made our knowledge distinctly our own are changing. The work therefore places agency at the center. Each path represents the possibility of individual choice. Yet when different choices emerge from an increasingly common pool of knowledge, can agency remain entirely individual? Or can independent journeys begin to converge, even while they continue to feel personal? Perhaps what we risk losing is not simply the human hand. Perhaps we risk losing difference. And perhaps, when the destination becomes common knowledge, the journey becomes the last place where individuality survives.
