A MEMORY THAT NEVER HAPPENED
By Norikazu Haji · JP
At first glance, this appears to be an ordinary family photograph taken on a quiet summer day in Japan. Three women sit together on a veranda. They seem to be relatives from different generations, but they are actually the same fictional person at different stages of life. The work explores what happens to memory when artificial intelligence can create photographs of events that never occurred. I wanted the image to feel familiar before it feels impossible. There are no robots, interfaces, glitches, or other obvious signs of technology. AI is present only through the photograph’s impossible premise. The repeated facial features and quiet similarities invite the viewer to look again and question what they are seeing. If an image can make us nostalgic for a moment that never happened, what exactly are we remembering?
