What World Will You Leave Me?
By Akhmetzhanov Yernur · KZ
A girl stands in the ruins of her home, holding a broken brick against her chest. The material that once protected her now becomes something she grips for protection. A person offers an open hand, but she has not yet accepted it. The painting explores what war can leave inside a child: fear, vigilance and uncertainty about whether another human being can be trusted. Her expression is not one of inherent cruelty. It is the guarded response of someone whose sense of safety has been broken. Dramatic light brings the girl's face and the two contrasting gestures out of darkness. Between her clenched hands and the offered palm lies the unresolved possibility of trust. I wanted to make an appeal for peace through one encounter rather than through spectacle. Rebuilding a home does not automatically rebuild a child's confidence in the world. That also requires patience, kindness and protection. The title addresses the adults whose choices shape the world the next generation will inherit.
