Meditation
By Agata Kycia · DE
Meditation Hand embroidery on canvas Meditation starts as code. A programmed algorithm produced the pattern: a precise, repeatable design that a machine could render in a fraction of a second. I then stitched it by hand, one thread at a time, over many hours. The work sits in the gap between these two speeds. The digital pattern is instant and identical every time. The embroidery is slow and attentive, and each stitch carries small variations that only a human hand leaves behind. What the machine designs, the hand interprets. The repetition becomes a meditative practice: a quiet act of presence and patience that is now increasingly rare. Meditation celebrates handicraft as a form of meaning-making. The work suggests that in an age of generated images, the human contribution may lie less in originating form than in the time, care and intention we give it.
