What Remains
By Pascal Bertin · FR
An old man, eyes closed. His face is being pulled into the dark; only the ear, the beard and the white hair remain sharp. What still listens. What still holds on. This image answers my other entry, Echoes. There, a man multiplies. Here, he fades. AI can now reproduce, transform or alter a face endlessly. So what makes a person remain themselves? Since my first prints in the darkroom, I have been looking for the moment an image turns fragile, when the black begins to take it back. Here, I chose to let the face go and keep only what resists: the ear, the skin, the beard. The image can move, distort, disappear. Something of the person, still, remains.
