The Dream Was Hers
By Kim Svedberg · NO
I have imagined things I could not draw. AI has given me a way to make some of them visible. That experience is the starting point for this painting. An elderly woman sits alone at her desk, making rough sketches of herself as an astronaut. On her laptop, an image takes shape: she is looking down at Earth from a spacecraft. She is still the same woman, with her white hair, wrinkles, and eighty years of life. Nearby, an old photograph recalls her younger self, while a distant rocket rises beyond the window. I did not want her to be longing for youth or mourning a life she never lived. She is curious, engaged, and creating something in the present. The technology has not made her an astronaut. It has not dreamed on her behalf. It has simply given her a way to express something she could previously only imagine. For me, the interesting question is not whether a tool can dream, but what becomes possible for the people using it.
