The Part I Did Not Let It Fill
By Heyi Qin · CN
Generative fill is the signature gesture of image AI: show it a gap and it closes it. When Keith Haring's deliberately Unfinished Painting (1989) was "completed" with AI in 2024, many people felt that the empty part had been the work all along. This picture is about keeping a gap open on purpose. A bare studio at dusk. A wide window opens onto a Dutch polder: a straight ditch, a line of bare willows, a thin apricot band under a heavy blue-grey sky and, on the horizon, a small farmhouse. On an easel beside the window stands a canvas that repeats the same view. At its centre one passage is not painted. It is covered with strips of pale masking tape and faint ruled lines, the way a painter protects a passage before committing to it. The machine can paint that passage, and it did: in the completed version, shown in the supporting PDF, the canvas holds a farmhouse with a single lit window, the warmest light in the whole scene. I rejected it. Everything else in the picture was allowed to be generated. The one thing I held back is the most human detail in the landscape: a light that someone switched on in a house at evening. Not every gap is a defect to be repaired; some are a place left for a person.
