1995-2026

I created the work intuitively, without a preconceived intention. It was built in stages, and the two figures were created separately and brought together in this work. The figure within the frame is based on a self-portrait of me, disguised as a dark woman, which I created in 1995 during my first year of art studies. I developed and printed the photograph myself using an analog process. A few years ago, it underwent AI processing, and in the current work it underwent an additional transformation. The figure on the left was created gradually. About four years ago, I created the original figure using AI. Shortly afterward, I drew it in pencil from observation, and later processed the drawing using AI into a color image. Only in the current work did the figure acquire the materiality of marble. Thirty-one years separate the 1995 self-portrait from the current work, carrying within them a very complex and difficult life story. During the process, I experimented with different material qualities — a silver relief, embroidery, charcoal drawing, and a relief in soft pastel colors — until I arrived at the final appearance. I chose the materiality of light, delicate marble in order to quiet the tension in the work and bring viewers closer to it.
