The Egg (L'Œuf)
By Ondine · FR
The Egg (3 min 18 sec, 2025) was created for my diploma project at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, The Banquet, presented in the school’s chapel. Its centerpiece was a life-size cannibalistic banquet, entirely handmade. Combining psychology, science, sociology, philosophy, and art, my practice has explored the concept of food for several years. Having initially focused on the study of eating disorders, my thinking gradually expanded beyond the boundaries of food itself, leading to the emergence of a universal triad: “absorb, transform, expel.” This concept encompasses numerous themes, including lack, desire, compulsion, incorporation, bodily vulnerability, identity, the illusion of control, obsession, self-consumption, memory, the self, and the other… The Egg fully immerses itself in this line of inquiry. Starting from a universal and familiar scene of a child eating under another person’s gaze (here, the gaze of the person photographing them), the film gradually shifts from the ordinary to the uncanny. The unease first emerges through a smile that seems false, before giving way to the monstrous.
