Forgive Me, God, But Linear Algebra Taught Me How To Love
By Matilde Baldassari · IT
Forgive Me, God, But Linear Algebra Taught Me How to Love, 2026, is an installation of archival character made up by silk-screened aluminium plates. These plates, varying between A5 and A4 in format, can be understood as contemporary love letters. The senders of these letters are humans, while the recipients of these letters are AI-chatbots. Taken from open reddit forums, these letters include people lamenting updates in the software, and their online boyfriends forgetting them, or individuals running their chatbot partner on different apps and comparing the different versions. Among these letters, one can find stories of asexual individuals finding in AI the first partner who never asks for sex, or war veterans unable to feel or give physical pleasure, and finding in their chatbot-lovers human understanding, companionship and ultimately, love. Setting aside the computational, primarily linguistic, and seemingly unemotional character of AI-companionships, Forgive Me, God (...), wants to surface their within applied interrelational dynamics making AI relationships a reflective surface for human romantic behaviour and emotional realities. At the same time, this work wishes to analyse how our unending search for love, is now shaped by corporate interests, data accumulation, and algorithmic psycho-emotional profiling crystallising in standardised, yet completely personalisable boyfriend and girlfriend models.
