AILA

AILA is an interactive installation piece that combines 3D modelling, programming, technology and AI to deliver a thought provoking and inspiring experience to audiences. First conceived in 2023 and built around integrating conversational AI with Jungian archetypes, the talking elements were built prior to conversational AI being a mainstay in the APKs of ChatGPT and Claude. The conversational element of the work came first and then the installation work was built around an intriguing format. Audiences discover the work as a presence, with animated eyes showing a separate series of artworks titled Core Devices, which represent the emergence of consciousness from conception to adulthood. I opted to use Jungian ideas within this piece as it strongly reflects my own journey through life, discovering many elements within my own psyche that closely aligned with ideas contained within the red book. I chose the particular archetypes of the mother, the warrior, the sage, the rebel/joker/jester, and incorporated my own archetypes of death (the reaper) and the artist (the expression of the inner child). Each mask was painted to represent each one of these archetypes and then programmed into a microcomputer which ran the ai system, audiences could pluck a mask from the wall and place it onto the central plinth where the archetype would introduce itself and then begin a conversation with the audience. Due to the way I set this system up this could be done with speakers to fill a space with the voice, or it could be achieved with headphones for a more intimate conversation. That conversational piece essentially made the ai system it's own entity and performer within the space. The idea of immersive theatre being planted earlier on and manifesting as an automated system that could be it's own agent to a degree. The rest of the artwork was built via 3D modelling/digital sculpture, CNC, mold-making and casting, painting and finishing techniques, laser engraving, programming, and carpentry.
