Fragments of the Human Heart
By Michael Grivas · GR
This artwork is rooted in my experience. At 23, I was diagnosed with Brugada Syndrome, an inherited condition. During the COVID 19 pandemic, I spent months hospitalized, alone and far from my family. My parents traveled for hours daily to see me, but restrictions prevented them from staying. Despite my fear, I dreamed about life after the hospital. I learned about children with heart conditions and silent struggles. This connected with my childhood, when I experienced years of bullying because of my appearance, glasses, and quiet personality. The central child carries these experiences. The scenes symbolize pain, loneliness, illness, fear, and love. Some faces are distorted and deformed, creating the feeling that everything exists within a bad dream, reflecting fear and painful memories. The fractured heart represents our wounds, while its light symbolizes hope and resilience. Ultimately, the artwork is a message that we must keep fighting, keep dreaming, and never give up even now.
